Substantially amorphous olefin copolymers and compatible tackifying resins useful as hot-melt, pressure-sensitive adhesives
| Details |
Inventors: Trotter, Jimmy R.; Joyner, Frederick B.; McConnell, Richard L.;
Assignee: Eastman Kodak Company (Rochester, NY)
Primary Examiner: Seccuro; Carman J.
Assistant Examiner:
Attorney, Agent or Firm: Tootle; Clyde L., Reece, III; Daniel B.
This invention relates to blends of compatible tackifiers with substantially amorphous olefin copolymers containing at least one C.sub.3 to C.sub.5 linear .alpha.-olefin and 40 to 60 mole percent of at least one C.sub.6 to C.sub.10 linear .alpha.-olefin which are useful as hot-melt, pressure-sensitive adhesives. The unmodified copolymer base resins have melt viscosities in the range of >75,000 cp up to about 1,000,000 cp at 190.degree. C. The addition of the compatible tackifiers to the copolymer base resin causes a dramatic and unexpected increase in the shear adhesion failure time in addition to improved coatability as well as substantial increases in probe tack and peel adhesion values of the copolymers. |

DETAILED DESCRIPTION We claim: 1. A substantially amorphous copolymer containing at least one C. sub. 3 to C. sub. 5 linear alpha-olefin and 40 to 60 mole percent of at least one higher alpha-olefin of 6 to 10 carbon atoms, said copolymer having a melt viscosity greater than 76,000 to 1,000,000 centipoise at 190. degree. C. , a density of 0. 85-0. 86, and a glass transition temperature of -30. degree. to -45. degree. C. , and said copolymers show little or no crystallinity by either X-ray or DSC techniques. 2. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 1 wherein said C. sub. 3 to C. sub. 5 linear alpha-olefin is propylene. 3. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 1 wherein said C. sub. 3 to C. sub. 5 linear alpha-olefin is butene-1. 4. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 1 wherein said C. sub. 3 to C. sub. 5 linear alpha-olefin is pentene-1. 5. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 2 wherein said higher alpha-olefin of 6 to 10 carbon atoms is hexene-1. 6. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 2 wherein said higher alpha-olefin of 6 to 10 carbon atoms is heptene-1. 7. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 2 wherein said higher alpha-olefin of 6 to 10 carbon atoms is octene-1. 8. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 2 wherein said higher alpha-olefin of 6 to 10 carbon atoms is nonene-1. 9. A substantially amorphous copolymer according to claim 2 wherein said higher alpha-olefin of 6 to 10 carbon atoms is decene-1.
Description:
This invention relates to hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive compositions having a novel combination of properties. More specifically, the invention relates to blends of compatible tackifiers with substantially amorphous olefin copolymers containing at least one C. sub. 3 to C. sub. 5 linear . alpha. -olefin and 40 to 60 mole percent of at least one C. sub. 6 to C. sub. 10 linear . alpha. -olefin which are useful as hot-melt, pressure-sensitive adhesives. Pressure-sensitive adhesives that have good tack and adhere to numerous substrates are widely used by industry in various applications such as in consumer products
