A low-Q mechanical resonator is operated in its series resonance mode in a circuit that includes an amplifier and voltage variable phase shifter. As the phase shift is varied, the resonator will shift its frequency to compensate the phase shift. The result is a voltage variable oscillator frequency. The low-Q resonator has a non-linear phase versus frequency characteristic so that frequency is not a linear function of control voltage. A plural emitter transistor is employed in one side of a differential control amplifier. The resulting non-linear transfer characteristic is used to compensate the non-linear oscillator characteristic so that the frequency versus control voltage is linear.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION I claim: 1.
A voltage controlled oscillator in which an applied voltage establishes a related frequency of oscillation, said oscillator comprising: a resonator for controlling the nominal frequency of said oscillator; amplifying means coupled to said resonator for sustaining oscillation therein; variable phase shift means coupled between said resonator and said amplifying means, said variable phase shift means being responsive to said applied voltage to vary said frequency; and non-linear control means including an unbalanced differential amplifier stage coupled to said variable phase shift means whereby the relation between said applied voltage and said frequency is substantially linear.
2.
The oscillator of claim 1 wherein said unbalanced differential stage comprises: a plural emitter transistor differentially coupled to a single emitter transistor, the collectors of said transistors being coupled to said differential control stage, the bases of said transistors being coupled to said applied voltages, and said emitters being coupled to a common current source.
3.
The oscillator of claim 2 wherein said transistor emitters are coupled together with a resistor network, said network comprising a resistor voltage divider coupled between said current source and the emitter of said single emitter transistor and a separate resistor coupled to each of the emitters of said plural emitter transistors with each of said separate resistors also being coupled to a top on said voltage divider.
4.
The oscillator of claim 2 wherein a dual emitter transistor is coupled to the collectors of said transistors with a separate emitter acting as a load element for each of said collectors.

Description:
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to circuits employing mechanical resonators in voltage controlled oscillators.
Mechanical resonators are often used because they are inherently stable and can be manufactured to relatively precise frequencies.
Since such resonators are inherently stable, they are difficult to frequency modulate, particularly if a wide range of modulation is desired
