A monitor network of a tag location system includes a grid of monitors for transmitting and receiving messages from neighboring monitors and tags within range of the monitor. Also provided is a memory device for storing: a unique identity of the monitor; each input partner monitor from which the monitor receives messages, and an output partner monitor to which the monitor sends messages; monitor and tag signals; a signal strength of the tag signals and significant changes thereto; an acknowledgement signal; and a distress signal indicating that the monitor has not received acknowledgement signal from its output partner monitor. Further there is a computer for periodically causing all tag signals, associated signal strengths and significant changes stored in the memory device to be transmitted to the output partner monitor, for forwarding received monitor messages to the output partner monitor, for issuing the acknowledgement message to be transmitted of a monitor message, for determining receipt of an acknowledgement and for sending a distress signal to all neighboring monitors within range of the monitor if an acknowledgement signal is not received from the output partner monitor. Tag signals issued by tags and received by the monitor directly from tags within range of the monitor or from input partner monitors are transmitted to the output partner monitor for forwarding to the central station, and wherein, monitor messages issued by the central station and receive from input monitors are transmitted, if required, to the output monitor.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a monitor of a communication network for a tag location system which employs tags that transmit data without being polled by an interrogator.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a monitor of an adaptive and intelligent network of monitors, which forwards tag information from one monitor to the next until the information is received by a central station to determine the location of the tag based on the information received.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a monitor of a communications network which is economical, easy to install and reconfigure.
One particularly advantageous feature of the present invention is the ability to handle over 10,000 tags within range of the same monitor at substantially the same time in a typical application.
This is in contrast to most systems, which can handle only one.
The large number of tags is made possible by the fact that each tag transmits its ID at random time relative to other tags, transmits only a few milliseconds, and in a typical application transmits only once per 5 minutes, so that the likelihood of two tag transmissions overlapping is very low unless the number of tags is huge.
Also, in the event of overlap, the only consequence is usually just a possible 5 minutes delay in noticing that a tag has moved, since in the preferred embodiment, transmissions include a crc code for error checking.
This multi-tag capability combined with the relatively long range of the tag transmission, allows the monitor network of the present invention to provide complete coverage of a given area in an economical manner by tremendously reducing the number of monitors required for such coverage.
These and other objects, advantages and features of the present invention are achieved, according to one embodiment thereof, by a monitor of a communication network of a tag location system, the monitor being provided for transmitting and receiving messages from a central computer of the system, as well as neighboring monitors and tags within communication range of a given monitor
