A human EMAP III polypeptide and DNA (RNA) encoding such polypeptide and a procedure for producing such polypeptide by recombinant techniques is disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for utilizing such polypeptide for preventing and/or treating neoplasia. Diagnostic assays for identifying mutations in nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide of the present invention and for detecting altered levels of the polypeptide of the present invention for detecting diseases, for example, cancer, are also disclosed.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION What is claimed is: 1.
An isolated antibody or fragment thereof that specifically binds to a protein whose amino acid sequence consists of amino acid residues 1 to 168 of SEQ ID NO:2.
2.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1 wherein said protein bound by said antibody or fragment thereof is glycosylated.
3.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1 wherein said antibody or fragment thereof is human.
4.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1 wherein said antibody or fragment thereof is polyclonal.
5.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1 wherein said antibody or fragment thereof is monoclonal.
6.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1 which is selected from the group consisting of: (a) a chimeric antibody or fragment thereof; (b) a humanized antibody or fragment thereof; (c) a single chain antibody; and (d) a Fab fragment.
7.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1 which is labeled.
8.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1 wherein said antibody or fragment thereof specifically binds to said protein in a Western blot or an ELISA.
9.
An isolated cell that produces the antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1.
10.
A hybridoma that produces the antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1.
11.
A method of detecting EMAP III protein in a biological sample comprising: (a) contacting the biological sample with tie antibody or fragment thereof of claim 1; and (b) detecting the EMAP III protein in the biological sample.
12.
An isolated antibody or fragment thereof that specifically binds an EMAP III protein purified from a cell culture wherein said EMAP III protein is encoded by a polynucleoride encoding amino acids 1 to 168 of SEQ ID NO:2.
13.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 12 wherein said antibody or fragment thereof is monoclonal.
14.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 12 wherein said antibody or fragment thereof is polyclonal.
15.
The antibody or fragment thereof of claim 12 wherein said antibody or fragment thereof is human.
