This invention provides a method of attenuating post-surgical catabolic changes and hormonal responses to stress. GLP-1, a GLP-1 analog, or a GLP-1 derivative, is administered at a dose effective to normalize blood glucose.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION The present invention therefore presents for the first time a method of attenuating post-surgical catabolic changes and insulin resistance, comprising, administering to a patient in need thereof a compound selected from the group consisting of GLP-1, GLP-1 analogs, GLP-1 derivatives, and pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof.
