An automatic transmission control system for an automatic transmission including a hydraulic pressure control circuit which supplies locking and unlocking pressures selectively to a plurality of friction coupling elements to lock and unlock the selected friction coupling elements, changing a torque transmission path in a transmission gear mechanism to provide available gears, a specific one of which is achieved by locking and unlocking simultaneously specific friction coupling elements. |

DETAILED DESCRIPTION It is an object of the invention to provide an automatic transmission control system for an automotive vehicle which comprises a transmission gear mechanism having a plurality of friction coupling elements which include at least first to third friction coupling elements such as a forward clutch, a 2-4 brake and a 3-4 clutch, and hydraulic pressure control means for supply and discharge of working fluid pressure between the friction coupling elements and a fluid pressure source to selectively lock and unlock the friction coupling elements so as to change a torque transmission path of the transmission gear mechanism, and hence to provide available gears including a specific gear which is achieved by locking the first friction coupling element, i. e. the forward clutch, and unlocking both the second and third friction coupling elements, i. e. the 2-4 brake and 3-4 clutch. The first friction coupling element has an input rotary member through which torque is input and an output rotary member through which torque is output, and the input and output rotary members are able to rotate relatively to each other at a relative speed which is variable in accordance with unlocking order of the second and third friction coupling elements, or the 2-4 brake and 3-4 clutch, during a gear shift, in particular a down shift, to the specific gear. The control system includes first to third working pressure regulating means installed in fluid paths to the first to third friction coupling elements, respectively, from a fluid pressure source for controlling supply and discharge of working fluid pressure between them, and an operation control means which provers a shift command signal representing one of scheduled gear shifts selected according to a vehicle speed and an engine load. The operation control means controls, when the shift command signal represents a gear shift, in particular a down shift, to the specific gear, supply and discharge operation of the first, second and third working pressure regulating means to lock the first friction coupling element, i
