The present invention is in the field of prophylaxis of allergies, and relates specifically to primary prevention of atopic diseases by administering probiotic bacteria, beneficial microbes of the healthy gut flora, pre- and postnatally to children at high risk of atopic diseases. In an embodiment, probiotic bacteria are administered to a pregnant woman at least two weeks before infant delivery and after delivery, probiotic bacteria are administered to the newborn infant for at least two months. The amount of probiotic bacteria administered is about 1.times.10.sup.8 to about 1.times.10.sup.10 colony forming units of the probiotic bacteria.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION What is claimed is: 1.
A method for prevention of atopic diseases selected from the group consisting of atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis and asthma in an infant at high risk of said atopic diseases, comprising administering to a pregnant woman a daily dose of live probiotic bacteria in an amount of about 1.

10 colony forming units of the probiotic bacteria for at least 2 months; wherein said probiotic bacteria are selected from the group consisting of Lactobacillus casei spp.
rhamnosus ATCC 53103 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb-12.
2.
The method according to claim 1, wherein the administering of said live probiotic bacteria to said pregnant woman and to said newborn infant results in promoting early bifidogenic gut microflora.
