A composition comprising a dermatologically acceptable carrier and an effective amount of a hydroxy acid compound, present in a concentration of about 10.

-6 M, wherein the composition can stimulate cellular proliferation of mammalian fibroblasts or keratinocytes, and wherein the hydroxy acid compound is salicylic acid or acetylsalicylic.

The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition further comprises an effective amount of a jasmonic acid compound, a gibberellic acid compound or a zeatin compound.

The composition of claim 2, wherein the jasmonic acid compound is a compound of any one of formulae VI IX: ##STR00012## wherein: R3 is alkyl; R4 is COOR, or --(CH.

n--OX, where n is an integer of from 1 to 20; R is H, or alkyl; X is H, or 1 to 6 hexose or pentose residues; and Y is H, alkyl, or 1 to 6 hexose or pentose residues.

The composition of claim 2, wherein the jasmonic acid compound is jasmonic acid, hydroxyjasmonic acid, dihydrojasmonic acid, or dihydro-hydroxyjasmonic acid.

The composition of claim 2, wherein the zeatin compound is a compound of formula X: ##STR00013## wherein: R5 is H, 3-hydroxymethl-3-methylallyl, alkyl, --(CH.
