Attorney, Agent or Firm:

An optical display system and method selectively displaces delta triad pixels vertically. The first raster line of picture information is removed from the video signal, and each subsequent raster line of picture information (data) is displaced upward. Next, the entire picture is optically displaced down by a distance equal to one vertical pixel pitch placing the picture back in its original vertical position, but horizontal position of the pixels has changed. Thus picture information is displaced horizontally a distance equal to one and one half times horizontal pixel pitch. Odd pixel rows are displaced in one direction, and even pixel rows are displaced in the opposite direction. The technique can be used to double pixel density and, thus, resolution, in the horizontal direction by the selective shifting technique and coordination with the input video signals. Two views of a picture alternate at the frame rate fast enough to fuse them into a single image, and two successive frames are combined over time to act as a single super frame. This is time based multiplexing of a spatial pattern. Thus, a composite picture is formed using a strip pixel pattern with twice the horizontal pixel density of the original delta pattern. The triads in the first half of this super frame may partially overlap the triads in the second half of the super frame. This technique can be applied to either progressive or interlace scan formats.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION I claim: 1.
A method of displaying a colored image provided from a display having plural pixels, at least some of which are comprised of plural differently colored sub-pixels which are arranged in other than a vertical straight line, comprising selectively optically shifting the apparent location of at least one of such differently colored sub-pixels into substantially a straight line relation with another of such differently colored sub-pixels, wherein said plural pixels are comprised of triads of differently colored sub-pixels, at least two of such differently colored sub-pixels of a given triad being in one line and a third differently colored sub-pixel of such triad being displaced from the first two, and wherein said selectively optically shifting comprises shifting the third differently colored sub-pixel to be in a substantially continuous row with the first two.
2.
The method of claim 1, wherein the differently colored sub-pixels of a pixel are arranged in a delta pattern and said selectively optically shifting comprises shifting the third differently colored sub-pixel to a location approximately between the first two.
3.
A method of displaying an image by a display having plural pixels arranged in rows, each pixel comprising a color triad of three differently colored sub-pixels, two of said sub-pixels arranged in one row of the display and a third arranged in an adjacent row adjacent to the one row, comprising: delivering signals to the display for operation of the pixels to create an image for display, said delivering signals comprising delivering the signals grouped by row, preventing the signals corresponding to a first or a last row of pixels of the display from having effect to drive the first or the last row of pixels, delivering to a given row of pixels the signals that ordinarily would drive a different row of pixels and optically shifting the location of said given row of pixels, subsequently delivering to another row of pixels the signals that ordinarily would drive said different row of pixels without optically shifting the location of such different row of pixels
