In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, a picture signal is processed by receiving a picture type signal indicating one of intra-picture coding, predictive coding and bi-directionally predictive coding for respective pictures represented by the picture signal.
The picture signal is encoded as a function of the picture type signal to produce an encoded picture signal.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, an encoded picture signal is processed by decoding the encoded picture signal to produce a picture type signal and a decoded picture signal.
The picture type signal and the decoded picture signal are multiplexed to produce an output signal.
