This invention relates to the use of bisulfite-terminated oligomers as dispersants for solid particulate matter, i.e., low molecular weight bisulfate-terminated polymers containing carboxylate groups and either cyano or carbomethoxy moieties are improved dispersants for solid particulate matter like pigments such as titanium dioxide, clay, calcium carbonate, talc, and zinc oxide, as well as for organic pigments. Particularly, these dispersants have been found useful for stabilizing paper coating compositions.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION What is claimed is: 1.
A method of dispersing insoluble solid particulate matter selected from the group consisting of inorganic pigments, extenders, and fillers in aqueous systems containing 25 to 85% by weight solid particulate matter comprising adding, in an amount effective to disperse the solid particulate matter, an oligomer having the formula: ##STR4## wherein M is a water soluble cation; X is selected from --CN and --COOCH.
sub.
3 ; M' is based on a cation selected from the group consisting of ammonia, an amine, and an alkali metal; a + b is from 4 to 250; and a/a + b is from 0.
0 to 0.
6.
2.
The method of claim 1 wherein X is --CN.
3.
The method of claim 1 wherein X is --COOCH.
sub.
3.
4.
The method of claim 1 wherein the solid particulate matter is selected from the group consisting of titanium dioxide, clay, calcium carbonate, talc, and zinc oxide.
5.
The method of claim 1 wherein the oligomer is added at a rate of 0.
01 to 10 parts by weight per 100 parts of solid particulate matter.
6.
The method of claim 1 wherein the oligomer is added at a rate of 0.
02 to 3 parts by weight per 100 parts of solid particulate matter.
7.
The method of claim 1 wherein the oligomer is added as a concentrated solution.
8.
The method of claim 1 wherein a+b is 10 to 60.
9.
The method of claim 1 wherein a/a+b is from about 0.
0 to 0.
5.
10.
The method of claim 1 wherein a/a+b is from about 0.
0 to 0.
4.
11.
The method of claim 1 wherein the resultant dispersion is used for paper coating.
12.
The method of claim 11 wherein X is --CN.
13.
The method of claim 11 wherein X is --COOCH.
sub.
3.
14.
The method of claim 11 wherein a+b is 4 to 50.
15.
The method of claim 11 wherein a/a+b is 0.
0 to 0.
4.
16.
The method of claim 11 wherein a/a+b is 0.
0 to 0.
2.
17.
The method of claim 11 wherein a/a+b is 0.
0 to 0.
1.
18.
The product produced by the method of claim 11.
19.
A chemical composition comprising (a) 25 to 85% by weight insoluble solid particulate matter selected from the group consisting of inorganic pigments, extenders, and fillers, (b) water, and (c) an oligomeric dispersing agent having the formula: ##STR5## wherein M is a water soluble cation; X is selected from --CN and --COOCH
