A sealing glass and a sealing glass paste for sealing the face plate and funnel portion of a color television tube wherein PbO-containing sealing glass frit contains from an effective amount of a powder, such as Pb.sub.3 O.sub.4 powder, which powder prevents the reduction of PbO to Pb metal during the sealing process, which reduction would otherwise result in a dielectric breakdown in the seal. A sealing glass paste consisting essentially of a PbO-B.sub.2 O.sub.3 -ZnO sealing glass frit and containing an effective amount of said powder, based upon the weight of the frit, together with hydroxypropyl cellulose binder for the frit and a solvent for the binder. A method for sealing the face plate of a color television tube to its funnel portion with a PbO-containing solder glass wherein the reduction of PbO to metallic lead during the sealing step is obviated by the addition of a sufficient amount of Pb.sub.3 O.sub.4 or BaO.sub.2 powder in the solder glass and paste made therewith, which Pb.sub.3 O.sub.4 or BaO.sub.2 is slowly reduced to a lower oxide in a reducing atmosphere during the sealing of the television tube components. A method for increasing the dielectric properties of a PbO-containing sealing glass paste and the devitrified seal made therefrom, which seals the face plate to the funnel of a color television tube, to a value greater than that provided by the solder glass, per se, by incorporating in the solder glass and the solder glass paste made therefrom a small but sufficient amount of Pb.sub.3 O.sub.4 or BaO.sub.2 to accomplish this purpose. A vehicle for a glass frit comprises hydroxypropyl cellulose as a binder and a solvent for said binder. |

DETAILED DESCRIPTION We claim: 1. In a sealing glass paste comprising a PbO-containing sealing glass frit, a binder for said frit and a solvent for said binder, the improvement wherein said sealing glass paste having present with said sealing glass frit an amount of powder sufficient to prevent reduction of the PbO during sealing of said sealing glass frit, said powder being a higher oxide of a cation which is thermally stable at the temperature at which such sealing glass frit seals and which can be chemically reduced to a lower oxide of the cation when exposed to said reducing conditions, said lower oxide of said cation being compatible with the fired sealing glass, said higher oxide of said cation being selected from the group consisting of Pb. sub. 3 O. sub. 4, BaO. sub. 2, CrO. sub. 3, MnO. sub. 2, Mn. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, Fe. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, Fe. sub. 3 O. sub. 4, CuO, Cu. sub. 2 O, Zr. sub. 2. H. sub. 2 O, Tl. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, Sb. sub. 2 O. sub. 3, TeO. sub. 2, Ta. sub. 2 O. sub. 5, Nb. sub. 2 O. sub. 5, V. sub. 2 O. sub. 5, CeO. sub. 2, and Bi. sub. 2 O. sub. 3. 2. Sealing glass paste according to claim 1 wherein said binder comprises hydroxypropyl cellulose. 3. Sealing glass paste according to claim 1 wherein said binder comprises a mixture of hydroxypropyl cellulose and nitrocellulose, said hydroxypropyl cellulose being present in an amount sufficient to impart stability to a paste comprising said vehicle and frit. 4. Sealing glass paste according to claim 1 wherein said hydroxypropyl cellulose has an average molecular weight of from between about 40,000 and about 300,000. 5. Sealing glass paste according to claim 1 wherein said solvent is amyl acetate. 6. Sealing glass paste according to claim 1 in which said solvent is ethylene glycol methyl ether. 7. Sealing glass paste according to claim 1 in which said solvent is selected from the group consisting of amyl acetate, ethylene glycol methyl ether, ethylene glycol ethyl ether, methyl amyl acetate, ethyl hexyl acetate, n-butyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, sec. butyl acetate and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetates
