Production of methane from a substrate comprising an organic material, by way of example in a process by means of a culture of anaerobic and preferably thermophile microorganisms, which in a processing chamber (8) is brought into contact with the organic material and in which the generated gas is collected. The substrate is introduced into an ante-chamber (7) for pretreatment which is provided with a heating device (28) with the substrate heated in the ante-chamber to at least the temperature that it is intended to have during the process or preferably to a higher temperature, whereafter it is transported to said processing chamber (8) to be brought into contact with the culture of microorganisms. |

DETAILED DESCRIPTION I claim: 1. An apparatus for the production of methane from a biomass substrate comprising organic materials by culturing and growing therein of anaerobic thermophilic organisms capable of releasing methane from a biomass, comprising a processing chamber (8, 41) for enclosing said biomass substrate containing said culture during methane formation; said processing chamber including means (32, 39) for collecting and removing the methane formed; and antechamber (7, 14) connected to said processing chamber via conduit means (20, 21, 18, 25, 27, 47a, 47b); said antechamber including means (28, 45) for heating said fresh substrate; pumping means (16,17, 47) for transferring heated substrate from said antechamber (7,40) to said processing chamber (8, 41) and for mixing and distributing said heated substrate throughout said chambers said pumping means (16, 17, 47) including valve means for directing the discharge of said pumping means between the transfer and introduction of the substrate from said antechamber (40) to said processing chamber (41) and for mixing and distributing by pumping action of said biomass substrates within each of said chambers. 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein at least one pumping means (48) within one of said chambers (8/41) is provided with a suction orifice and a pressure orifice (49); the latter being disposed in front of the orifice of a conduit means (50) extending from the chamber with the pumping means; said pumping means being disposed to be pivoted between the positions where the pressure orifice is directed against the orifice of said conduit means and a position where the pressure orifice is free within the chamber, so that the substrate can be either pumped into the conduit means or circulated and mixed within the chamber. 3. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said antechamber is positioned within and surrounding by said processing chamber and wherein prior to introducing the fresh biomass substrate into the antechamber, said fresh substrate is contacted with heated biomass being transferred to processing chamber in heat exchanger means whereby said fresh biomass is preheated and said transferred biomass is cooled to processing chamber temperatures
