In an unexposed imaging composition comprising a source of phthalaldehyde and an energy-activatible material capable of generating an amine that reacts with said phthaladehyde to form a dye, said material including a cobalt(III) complex; the improvement wherein said source of phthalaldehyde comprises an adduct of phthalaldehyde in an amount sufficient to produce in said composition a maximum neutral density of at least 1.
