An autonomous processor for displaying on a video tube both text characters and facsimile data. To conserve memory space the facsimile data is stored in compressed form and is decompressed or unfolded in synchronism with the vertical and horizontal deflections in the video tube. Similarly the text characters are stored in coded form, together with interspaced commands, both inscribed in a list memory. Each character code in the list then selects an appropriate dot matrix from a font memory which also contains displacement data. Selected lines of the font dot matrices are then addressed by row coordinates to form a horizontal video signal, which is accumulated in a ping pong buffer concurrently unloading into a video register. This same video register merges the facsimile data which is concurrently unfolded.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION Accordingly, it is the general purpose and object of the present invention to provide an autonomous display processor adapted to emulate the functions of a typewriter.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an autonomous processor separated into a character and facsimile section which are integrated into a single video signal.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a facsimile processor including compression of facsimile data.
Additional objects of the invention are to provide a character generator which accumulates character segments concurrent with the generation of a video signal.
Yet further objects of the invention are to provide a buffer system wherein overlapping character segments are directly superposed into a buffer system.
Other objects of the invention are to produce a video buffer system onto which overlapping signal inputs are directly overlayed to avoid cycling through a register.
Other objects of the invention are to utilize a facsimile generator concurrent with the generation of text.
Yet further objects of the invention are to utilize a facsimile generator storing graphic data in compressed form which is decompressed in synchronism with the refresh cycles of a video display tube.
Yet other objects of the invention are to provide a display processor which requires minimal communication paths with a using system.
Yet additional objects of the invention are to provide a display processor which operates in an autonomous mode, thereby limiting the load imposed on any using system.
Yet further objects of the present invention are to minimize the memory size of an autonomous display system adapted for both character and facsimile generation.
Additional objects of the present invention are to provide an optimized display processor useful in conjunction with various data processing systems.
Briefly these and other objects are accomplished within the present invention by combining a facsimile processor with a character generator in a display system, where the character generator provides the character image components while the facsimile processor fills in the rest
