This invention relates to apparatus and the method for preparing corneal tissue for surgical graft, implantation or transplantation referred to herein as "surgical techniques" or "surgical procedures." Use of the apparatus and method for preparing the corneal tissue avoids significant modification of the ultrastructure of corneal tissue during preparation of the tissue samples themselves.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION What is claimed is: 1.
A method for cryopreparing corneal tissue for use in surgical procedures comprising: (a) obtaining a corneal tissue sample and sizing said tissue sample for its intended end use; (b) vitrifying said corneal tissue sample; (c) bringing said vitrified corneal tissue sample to equilibrium at a temperature of less than -140.
degree.
C.
; and (d) dehydrating said vitrified corneal tissue sample while said sample is maintained in a state of equilibrium.
2.
The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of sealing said dehydrated corneal tissue sample in a container, the atmosphere surrounding said sample in said container including a substantial portion of an inert gas.
3.
The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of rehydrating sid dehydrated corneal tissue sample.
4.
The method of claim 1 wherein said corneal tissue sample is vitrified in less than one second.
5.
The method of claim 1 wherein said dehydration is by means of sublimation.
6.
The method of claim 1 wherein said vitrified corneal tissue sample is dehydrated under vacuum.
7.
The method of claim 6 wherein said vacuum reaches from 1.
times.
10.
sup.
-8 Torr to 1.
times.
10.
sup.
-10 Torr.
8.
The method of claim 1 wherein said corneal tissue sample is characterized by an average diameter of from 3 to 11 millimeters.
9.
The method of claim 8 wherein said corneal tissue sample is characterized by an average thickness of from 0.
1 to 1.
0 millimeters.
10.
A method for cryopreparing corneal tissue for use in surgical procedures comprising: (a) obtaining a corneal tissue sample, said sample being characterized by an average diameter of from 3 to 11 millimeters and an average thickness of from 0.
1 to 1.
0 millimeters; (b) vitrifying said corneal tissue sample in less than one second; (c) bringing said vitrified corneal tissue sample to equilibrium at a temperature of less than -140.
degree.
C.
; and (d) dehydrating said vitrified corneal tissue sample by sublimation and under vacuum while said corneal tissue sample is maintained in a state of equilibrium
