A closed-caption scrolling method and apparatus suitable for displaying a closed caption including syllable characters and capable of reducing the memory capacity. According to the method, the caption signal is encoded in a line of each field of a broadcasting television signal which does not affect the broadcasting signal, and then transmitted to be displayed on a screen of a receiver. A control code for controlling the size of a scroll region and the scrolling direction is produced, so that character information following the control code is displayed on the predetermined scroll region, being scrolled in a predetermined direction, by the control code. |

DETAILED DESCRIPTION It is an object of the present invention to solve the problems involved in the prior art, and to provide a method of scrolling a closed-caption especially including syllable characters. It is another object of the present invention to provide a method of scrolling a closed-caption which can reduce the memory capacity of a receiving buffer by scrolling the pop-on caption words. In one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a closed-caption scrolling method wherein a broadcasting station encodes a caption signal in a line of each field of a television broadcasting signal which does not affect the broadcasting signal to transmit the encoded caption signal, and a receiver receives and displays the caption signal on a screen, the method comprising the steps of producing a control code for controlling a size of a scroll region and a scroll direction, and displaying character information following the control code on the scroll region determined by the control code, by scrolling the character information in a direction determined by the control signal. In another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a closed caption pop-on scrolling method wherein a broadcasting station encodes a caption signal in a line of each field of television broadcasting signal which does not affect the broadcasting signal to transmit the encoded caption signal, and a receiver receives and displays the caption signal on a screen, the method comprising the steps of extracting the caption signal from a received television video signal, restoring digital data from the extracted caption signal, checking whether or not the restored data corresponds to a pop-on mode, deleting commands for receive/store and off-display from a control code if it is checked that the restored data corresponds to the pop-on mode, reading out character data corresponding to a character code from a font read only memory (ROM) which stores therein the character data complying with a syllable character completion type code to store the read-out character data in a display memory; converting the character data stored in the display memory into a video signal to display the video signal on the screen, and scrolling pop-on characters displayed on the screen in response to a row-change control code
