DETAILED DESCRIPTION We claim: 1.
A linear viscoelastic dentifrice composition in the form of a toothpaste or dental gel with a pH of about 4 to about 9 comprising an orally acceptable water/humectant vehicle, an orally acceptable dental polishing agent and, in an amount effective to render the composition linearly viscoelastic, a synthetic linearly viscoelastic cross-linked polymeric thickening agent derived from a polymer containing repeating units in which one or more phosphonic acid groups are bonded to one or more carbon atoms in the polymer chain and having in a 1 wt.
% aqueous solution an elastic or storage modulus G" and a viscous or loss modulus G" substantially independent of frequency in an applied frequency range of 0.

A composition according to claim 1 wherein the said polymeric thickening agent is made with a cross-linking agent containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups or at least two groups reactive with pendant reactive groups along the polymer chain of the polymeric thickening agent.

A composition according to claim 3 wherein said thickening agent is made with 1,7-octadiene, 1,9-decadiene, or polyethylene glycol as cross-linking agent.

A composition according to claim 4 wherein said polymeric thickening agent comprises units of styrene phosphonic acid, vinyl phosphonic acid and/or vinyl phosphonyl fluoride.

A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polymeric thickening agent has a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 5,000,000 and comprises units of styrene phosphonic acid, vinyl phosphonic acid and/or vinyl phosphonyl fluoride
