A DL-, D- or L-carnitine ester of formula (I) ##STR10## wherein: R is a straight or branched, saturated or unsaturated alkanoyl group having 2-16 carbon atoms; Y is a straight or branched alkylene chain having 3-6 carbon atoms, or ortho, meta or para-xylilene; and X.

A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula (I): ##STR11## wherein: R is a straight or branched, saturated or unsaturated alkanoyl group having 2-16 carbon atoms; Y is a straight of branched alkylene chain having 3-6 carbon atoms, or ortho, meta or para-xylilene; and X is a anion of a pharmacologically acceptable acid; and a pharmacologically acceptable excipient thereof.

A composition of claim 6, comprising a compound of Formula (I) from 0.
5 to 2% by weight and a pharmacologically acceptable excipient thereof.

A method for treating a cutaneous or mixed cutaneous infection comprising application of a pharmaceutical composition of claim 6 to an infected tissue.
